Master's Message - February 2015

February traditionally ushers in the most bitter weather of the year, but alas with Valentine’s Day we are inspired by warmer thoughts and the notion to “follow our heart”. Here, in the “heart of the Commonwealth”, we pride ourselves in being of hardy stock; toil-worn and grizzled from all that Mother Nature can muster. This resiliency is also at the heart of Masonry. History reveals a tumultuous journey for Freemasonry, fraught with unfriendly winds and blizzards of misinformation and mistrust. These inclemencies are not unknown to us, as the biting wind is not unknown to our countenance; but still we persist.

So how has Freemasonry survived? We have survived through the tenets of our profession, Friendship, Morality and Brotherly Love, the life’s blood of our fraternity - service to others. Masons are by definition selfless. From the moment we make a demand at the door, we are inundated with new experiences and new ideas about what it means to be a man and a Mason. The degrees and the lessons contained therein provide the newly raised Mason with a foundation for intellectual, philosophical and spiritual growth. Delving deeper into the deeper significance of one’s own personal journey in Freemasonry takes commitment and perseverance. For Freemasonry to be successful in transforming a man, a Mason must continually renew his obligation. You cannot simply “take” the degrees, you must live their principles.

As Blue Lodge Masons we have the opportunity to renew our obligation thereby renewing our commitment to self, and further renew our service to God and our brethren by attending meetings and supporting our candidates through the degrees. If it is been some time since you attended a degree, I urge you to make that important commitment to yourself. Every time I have attended and/or participated in a degree I have been rejuvenated by the experienced. We will be performing the Entered Apprentice degree on Tuesday February 20th for possibly two candidates. I hope you will take the opportunity to come and support the new brothers, but also to renew your own obligation.

The Lodge is not the sum of just the officers in line; the Lodge is completed by the sideline brothers.

Also, please remember that we will be receiving our new DDGM, R.W. Gregory Stahl for a fraternal visit to our Lodge on Tuesday March 3rd at our regular communication. Let’s show our support for the district and throw down the challenge by making this visit the most well attended yet.

See you all in LODGE!
John F. Sullivan, Master
